テキスト『初級日本語げんき』の補助教材として使われることを目的として作られた。文法の練習をはじめ、聞く練習、漢字の練習などがあり、テキストで勉強した後、このワークブックを使い、学習項目の定着をはかることができる。「会話・文法編」には、テキストで導入された各文法項目につき1ページのワークシートがある。英語から日本語に翻訳する練習、絵を見て文を作る練習、穴埋め練習、質問に自由に答える練習などがあるが、既習の文法項目や単語も復習できるように出題されている。「読み書き編」は、漢字の練習シートと漢字の穴埋め問題で構成されている。
